About Capsule
The RWU capsule serves to educate current and alumni communities about the distinguished heritage of Roger Williams University and the historic town of Bristol, Rhode Island.
Early Years
1956-1970
During the 1960s, the school began granting bachelor’s degrees, and in 1967 subsequently adopted the name Roger Williams College. This represented a significant expansion from its earlier status as a two-year junior college that had been established in 1956.
The most notable development was the institution’s relocation: Needing a larger campus, the college purchased 80 acres of waterfront land and moved its main campus to Bristol in 1969. In the mid-1960s, Mary Howe and Marshall sold 60 acres of the farm to Roger Williams College for its new campus in Bristol.
